Compare the beginning and the end of the film you have studied.

In the movie one flew over the cookos nest directed by Milo’s Forman there are definite links between the start and end of the movie, he uses these links to show us the messages behind the film and help you understand the themes. One of the main links between the beginning and the end of the film is the patient’s level of individualism. Then there are obvious similarities between the beginning and end of the film and the beginning and end of the second testament of the Bible.

It was one of Milos Forman’s main ideas to show how important it was to maintain a sense of individuality. If we compare the beginning and the end of the movie we see how important individuality is to the patients and what effect it has on them. At the start of the movie when Mc Murphy is introduced to the facility he is loud and full of life. But what Milos Forman wants you to notice most is how much of an individual he is. The other patients in the facility are wearing white robes and look like zombies. Throughout the film Mc Murphy is trying to bring down nurse Ratchet and by doing so slowly gets suppressed. But the patients on the other hand rise up and in the end are very much individual, one of them even breaks through a window and escapes. Milos Forman wanted us to compare the beginning and the end of the movie to see the effect the “system” has on the individual and also to show how important individuality is. He uses the clothing of the patients as a symbol of how individual the patients as a symbol of how individual the patient is. This movie was based in the 1970’s which were famous for things like the anti-war protesting and the “Fuck the system” subculture that developed in the United States. The facility in this movie is a parallel of America. The movie uses the differences between the start and the end of the movie to show the effects an oppressive system has to a person. But it also represents how with help a group of people can overcome this kind of system with the help of others

Another thing Milo Forman wanted us to compare with the movies beginning and end is the story of Jesus Christ. In the second testament of the bible it tells the story of a man called Jesus, he is a messiah for god and travels the land spreading the true word of god and in doing so upturns a lot of the excising systems and gets a huge following of people. He calls his closest followers his disciples. At the end of the second testament one of his disciples gives away his locations to the Romans and Jesus gives himself up to be crucified for the sins of humanity. The movie is very similar with Mc Murphy being Jesus, the acute patients being his disciples and Billy being the one disciple that gives Mc Murphy away to nurse ratchet who fills the place of the Romans. Mc Murphy enters the facility full of life and spreads it to everyone he meets giving them hope. And nearing the end Mc Murphy puts so much of his energy into giving the other inmates energy that he dies for the sake of the other patients which is a parallel of jesus dieing for the sins of humanity. There are many other parallels throughout the book for example nurse ratchet plays the same role as the Romans did in the bible. Constantly trying to push Jesus down and doing things like attempting to turn his disciples against him and in the end this causes on of them to betray him. Infact throughtout the whole movie there are replicas of events in the bibal, for example the fishing trip with jesus’s disciples before jesus’s death which is a complete parallel with the fishing trip Mc Murphy takes the patients on. And of course the electro shock theraphy that really started destroying Mc Murphy that was essentially is “Crown of thorns”. Milo’s Forman intended us to recognize this link because as a Christian himself it was very important to him that the movie have some religious basis. Also it makes it easier for the viewer to relate to this story as most western people know the story of Christ and understand its ideas. We learn from the way Mc Murphy sacrifices himself for the other patients that you don’t get something for nothing. We see this story a lot in history were one person has managed to bring power to many others has eventually fallen because of it.

Overall Milo’s Forman manipulates us into comparing the beginning and the end of the movie to help us understand the themes in the movie and also to help us relate to them by drawing direct parallels with things like the bibal and history. The start of the movie is almost happy and stays the same until the end when the story comes falling down to create a very sober end, thus taking us on an emotional journey that we can relate to and also learn from.

The worst feeling is not death,
It is knowing that you aren't needed,
That you are alone in this world,
And that you no longer need a reason to live....

I like to work under cover of night. When the lights go out and the lawn is bathed in darkness my imagination starts to awaken. The yellowed paper happily a canvas under torchlight and bedsheets.
